COMMUNITIES AROUND THE CAMPUS

Rumeli Hisar Üstü:
Located across from the Etiler and North Gate of the campus, this town is particularly useful. It has the bread bakery closest to campus. Rumeli Hisar Üstü has restaurants, some grocery stores and markets, a pastry shop, pharmacies and a bevy of copy shops. It is one of the convenient locations for catching a bus downtown or finding a taxi.

Etiler:
The road from the Rumeli Hisar Üstü traffic circle runs west, past the university library and eventually into a residential and shopping area that comprises part of Etiler. In general Etiler offers an array of services, including barch offices of many of Turkey’s banks, some excellent pastry shops, a number of grocery stores, film developing shops, newsstands and restaurants, some of which are pricy. Akmerkez, one of the biggest shopping centers of Istanbul is also in Etiler, where you can find all of these shops in once.

Levent:
Of the four communities, Levent offers the widest array of shopping and eating alternatives, which compensates for the disadvantage of its distance from the campus. Levent has an outdoor market, numerous shops for purchasing varios kinds of food and clothing, many restaurants and some bars.

Rumeli Hisar: The commercial part of this district is on a steep hill, which has some grocery stores, and the main road itself by the sea. Rumeli Hisar has some inexpensive restaurants and some places that are significantly more expensive, particularly if you choose fish instead of meat. Some of these places also have deligtful second storey views of the Bosphorus as well as good food.

Bebek:
Bebek has a bookstore that carries a large arry of foreign magazines and newspapers, a number of grocery stores, restaurants that range in price from normal to very expensive, clothing stores, bars and sweet shops.

TRANSPORTATION
You can use bus, boat and taxi to go to downtown.

Buses
Your most frequent bus ride routes would likely to be Hisar Üstü to Taksim, Hisar Üstü to Eminönü, Bebek to Taksim and Bebek to Eminönü. Taksim is a center where you can find transportation facilities to any part of Istanbul.
There are two kinds of buses available for public transportation. Municipal buses, require tickets which must be purchased before boarding. Private buses (Halk Otobüsleri) will accept cash.
If you have any doubts about the destination of any bus, you can check the signs which are normally posted at the front and on the sides. They show all the major stops along the route that the bus is following.

Taxi:
You may also take a taxi. Always check the cabmeter and pay in Turkish Liras. Trying to pay in dollars will be a problem for you since it will not be easy to communicate nor do the calculation for conversion and you may end up paying too much. There is a taxi stop between the the campuses.
Bogaziçi Taxi: 0212 – 263 23 32

Boats:
The boat dock is at Bebek. This is a very pleasent way to travel, less crowded during rush hours and also a rapid way to get downtown on a weekday morning.
Weekdays there are two early morning boats which go to Eminönü. Along the way they stop at Ortaköy and Besiktas. The schedule is posted at the dock, inside the waiting room.

You can use two roads to go to town
Upper road: From Rumeli Hisar Üstü virtually all buses go to Taksim, Besiktas or Eminönü. All of them go through Etiler and Levent.
Lower, Coastal Road: This is the line for either Taksim or Eminönü via Besiktas.
