Useful Hints for Schoolars
FOREWORD
This brief guide is intended to facilitate the orientation of foreign
visitors at Bogaziçi University. It lists a variety of things
that are sooner or later discovered by visitors, providing them
with a head -start on certain practical matters.
MARKET
There are many markets near the campuses between campuses of Bogaziçi
University. You may also purchase basic needs such as toothbrush,
toothpaste, shampoo and soap from the Market in the basement of
first Men’s Dormitory (which is located in the South Campus).
The procedure for this market is that you tell the cashier what
you want, pay the amount in advance and then pick up what you ordered
by showing the receipt.
LIBRARY
The library holds a total of 320,000 volumes in English, Turkish,
French, German and other language, which makes it one of the largest
collections in the country. The Near East Collection is the richest
collection of Near East materials in Western languages in Turkey.
The Rare Book Division contains early printed books and manuscripts.
The Library receives over 1600 current periodicals. Microfilms of
the Times, New York Times, Cumhuriyet and Milliyet are also maintained.

Turkish newspapers & magazines, the Turkish Daily News, Herald
Tribune, Financial Times, Time, Economist and the like.
BANKS
There are two banks in the school and several ATM’s. The Garanti
Bank is by the Engineering Building. It exchanges foreign traveler’s
checks or cash for Turkish Lira and vice versa.
There is also a Yapi Kredi Bank right across the Post Office. They
can not change traveler’s checks but are able to convert dollars
and Euros to Liras.
NORTH CAMPUS BOOKSTORE
There is a major bookstore on the North Campus, catering to academic
needs as well as carrying a wide range of popular publications and
accessories with the school logo.
LANGUAGE
The official language of instruction at Bogaziçi University
is English. The predominant language of support staff, the bulletin
boards, the services available on the campus, and most of the casual
conversation is Turkish. Any student is a potential translator for
you. Students are often gracious and particularly helpful in that
role.
CATERING FACILITIES
One of the great bargains is lunch at Kennnedy Lodge which is open
between 12.00 – 14.00. Another choice will be the cafeteria
on the North Campus, which is open for main meals for students,
faculty and staff. There are canteens on the basement of the 1st
Men’s Dormitory (Hamlin Hall) and the Student Activities Building
on the South Campus. You can find other canteens on the North Campus
below the KB (Square Block) and on the Hisar Campus. All of these
canteens sell a variety of food and soft drinks.
Also, the Tourism Restaurant which is on the basement of the Education
Faculty Building on the North Campus, offers several choices.
POST OFFICE
There is a Post Office on the South Campus, right beside the Registrar’s
Office. From there you can buy phonecards, tokens and stamps. It
is open between 9:00 - 16:00. You can send all your mail form here
but you can not send or receive packages from the school branch.
You need to go a central Post Office, like the one in Levent or
Bebek. Incoming mail is delivered to academic departments.
MEDICAL SERVICE
All faculty, students and staff are provided with both preventive
and medical treatment in the campus infirmary, which gives free
24-hour service. Free dental care is also available.
COMPUTER CENTER
The Computer Center is on the South Campus. Computer Center is open
everyday between 9.00 - 11.00. You can also use the computer laboratories
in the Superdorm and the Educational Technology Building in North
Campus.
ALUMNI CLUB
It is a nice location for dinner and lunch where you can find meticulous
service and good food.
BARBER SHOP
On the basement of the 1st Men's Dormitory is a barbershop.
TRANSPORTATION FROM THE NORTH TO THE SOUTH CAMPUS
The walk between the two campuses is pleasent, with a wonderful
view, but there is also shuttle service from the South to the North.
It leaves whenever it is full, and it usually fills quickly.
ACTIVITIES
The campus offers a myriad of extra-curricular activities and social
events, almost all of which are prepared by students; concerts,
plays, films, folk dancing, exhibition, sports competitions, as
well as conferences make life at Bogaziçi University very
colorful.
LAUNDRY
There are two laundries one on the North Campus on the basement
of the Cafeteria Building and one on the basement of Superdorm.

access to an archive of approximately 2000 films on video that could
be checked out or watched in the small TV room at the Center.

COMMUNITIES AROUND THE CAMPUS
Rumeli Hisar Üstü:
Located across from the Etiler and North Gate of the campus, this
town is particularly useful. It has the bread bakery closest to
campus. Rumeli Hisar Üstü has restaurants, some grocery
stores and markets, a pastry shop, pharmacies and a bevy of copy
shops. It is one of the convenient locations for catching a bus
downtown or finding a taxi.
Etiler:
The road from the Rumeli Hisar Üstü traffic circle runs
west, past the university library and eventually into a residential
and shopping area that comprises part of Etiler. In general Etiler
offers an array of services, including barch offices of many of
Turkey’s banks, some excellent pastry shops, a number of grocery
stores, film developing shops, newsstands and restaurants, some
of which are pricy. Akmerkez, one of the biggest shopping centers
of Istanbul is also in Etiler, where you can find all of these shops
in once.
Levent:
Of the four communities, Levent offers the widest array of shopping
and eating alternatives, which compensates for the disadvantage
of its distance from the campus. Levent has an outdoor market, numerous
shops for purchasing varios kinds of food and clothing, many restaurants
and some bars.
Rumeli Hisar: The commercial part of this district is on a steep
hill, which has some grocery stores, and the main road itself by
the sea. Rumeli Hisar has some inexpensive restaurants and some
places that are significantly more expensive, particularly if you
choose fish instead of meat. Some of these places also have deligtful
second storey views of the Bosphorus as well as good food.
Bebek:
Bebek has a bookstore that carries a large arry of foreign magazines
and newspapers, a number of grocery stores, restaurants that range
in price from normal to very expensive, clothing stores, bars and
sweet shops.
TRANSPORTATION
You can use bus, boat and taxi to go to downtown.
Buses
Your most frequent bus ride routes would likely to be Hisar Üstü
to Taksim, Hisar Üstü to Eminönü, Bebek to Taksim
and Bebek to Eminönü. Taksim is a center where you can
find transportation facilities to any part of Istanbul.
There are two kinds of buses available for public transportation.
Municipal buses, require tickets which must be purchased before
boarding. Private buses (Halk Otobüsleri) will accept cash.
If you have any doubts about the destination of any bus, you can
check the signs which are normally posted at the front and on the
sides. They show all the major stops along the route that the bus
is following.
Taxi:
You may also take a taxi. Always check the cabmeter and pay in Turkish
Liras. Trying to pay in dollars will be a problem for you since
it will not be easy to communicate nor do the calculation for conversion
and you may end up paying too much. There is a taxi stop between
the the campuses.
Bogaziçi Taxi: 0212 – 263 23 32
Boats:
The boat dock is at Bebek. This is a very pleasent way to travel,
less crowded during rush hours and also a rapid way to get downtown
on a weekday morning.
Weekdays there are two early morning boats which go to Eminönü.
Along the way they stop at Ortaköy and Besiktas. The schedule
is posted at the dock, inside the waiting room.
You can use two roads to go to town
Upper road: From Rumeli Hisar Üstü virtually all buses
go to Taksim, Besiktas or Eminönü. All of them go through
Etiler and Levent.
Lower, Coastal Road: This is the line for either Taksim or Eminönü
via Besiktas.
